The Amsterdam BioMed Cluster is internationally recognised for its strong basic research and applied science performed in academia, research institutes, small biotech and large pharmaceutical companies. For an industry so dependent on scientific breakthroughs for progress, this is key.

Amsterdam BioMed, high impact medical research
The Amsterdam area has the highest concentration of life sciences research in the Netherlands with a strong biomedical focus. Similarly, the majority of life sciences companies in the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster are engaged in some field of Human Health. A tradition of excellence exists in five disease/ therapeutic areas, with multiple interactions between research institutes, small biotech and large pharmaceutical companies.
Cardiovascular diseases
The number of people suffering from cardiovascular disease is vast. The number of knowledge workers active in this field in the Amsterdam Area is too.
Infectious diseases
Several research institutes in Amsterdam have built up extensive expertise in infectious diseases.
Neuroscience
The scientific and clinical community in Amsterdam has invested heavily in building the interdisciplinary infrastructure best suited for translational research in the neurosciences.
Oncology
Amsterdam is home to some exceptionally strong centres for oncology research and treatment. In addition a number of companies active in the field is based in the Amsterdam Area.

It’s business stupid

What is it with the Dutch that they have such difficulty grabbing business opportunities in a changing world? We have the brains, we have the money and the opportunities are plenty. Still, during the last 40 years hardly any company of substantial size has emerged next to the old industry in the AEX.  Oil, food, materials and financial services dominate the landscape.

We have left the environmental challenges to environmentalists, rather then building innovative businesses in solar or wind energy to help face them. We have exported our knowledge on agriculture around the world, and now that we can more intelligently engineer crops we let the opportunity pass due to invalid arguments around GMOs. Now that  “kweekersrecht” is being substituted by patent law we complain instead of adapt.
