Company Profile

The Alan Turing Institute is dedicated to innovative scientific research and education. We reiterate that we aim at an interdisciplinary approach to health-related research, particularly targeted at individualized disease treatment. We have experts in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Obesity, Female Sexual Dysfunction, Cognitive and Affective neuroscience. We aim for the further development of our multidisciplinary research method through collaboration with external parties working in the medical domain, in cooperation with universities to safeguard and corroborate the institute's academic status and ambition.

Science and Technologies or Services

Although there is a growing interest for the individual patient in health care and health science in general, our approach is unique in that it employs techniques from artificial intelligence, and agent technology in particular, to reach its goals. In particular, knowledge from sources as heterogeneous as medicine, biology, psychology and psychiatry may each be represented by their own agents and agents may each have their own method of reasoning. Based on information available about a patient and the agents' own instruction sets, agents can reason on chains of causes and effects. In other words: our knowledge based systems structure knowledge and can reason with this knowledge in such a way that we can make more refined diagnoses and can predict prevention and treatment for individual patients based on their unique constellation.

Company Profile

The Medical Business Park (MBP) is currently under development at the site of the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (AMC). The MBP is intended for companies which wish to develop products and services in the area of (bio)medical sciences together with, or with the support of, the AMC. It is the place where they draw their future. The AMC places a high value on the exchange and broadening of knowledge, and also wishes to make better use of knowledge from its own research. AMC’s technology transfer office, Bureau Kennis Transfer (BKT), plays an essential role here. BKT facilitates patenting, partnering, due diligence and control in relation to all (commercial) management aspects of research findings, technology transfer and the foundation of spin-off companies.

The AMC offers these companies a broad package of facilities and support, including access to patients for research and R&D collaborations with scientifically well-known groups and, through BKT, a professional office which efficiently handles e.g. patent- or R&D contract related matters. A setting and synergy of this kind means exploring and developing new areas becomes possible.

The AMC traditionally has strong roots in a number of wide-ranging research areas: infectious diseases and immunology, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disorders, stomach, intestinal and liver disorders, neurological and psychiatric disorders, public health, and to an increasing extent also in oncology.

Science and Technologies or Services

One of the major services of the MBP Development Office will be the support of companies regarding business development, networking and supply facilities as e.g. accountancy, patenting, partnering, due diligence and control in relation to all (commercial) management aspects of research findings, technology transfer and the foundation of spin-off companies.

Company profile

The City of Amsterdam is the national leader in its concentration of both scientists and research institutes. It is home to the science faculties and research institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Vrije University (VU), the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam, the Medical Centre of the VU, and the institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The level of scientific and technological research is therefore world class.

Many research projects result in market-oriented innovations. This has a positive impact on the economy and society as a whole. However, the commercialization process whereby scientific innovations are brought to the market is still relatively undeveloped. Scientists lack entrepreneurial and business skills, whereas business people do not easily come into contact with the innovations originating from the research conducted at Science Park Amsterdam and the various scientific faculties.

Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship @ Science Park was established to foster education in entrepreneurship, stimulate and support innovative startups based on research done at Science Park Amsterdam institutes and at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. ACE @ Science Park aims to attracts students, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and companies to start and support new ventures at Science Park Amsterdam and become the ‘Amsterdam hub’ for science and technology entrepreneurship.

Science and Technologies or Services

Entrepreneurship education is offerd by the Faculty of Economics and Business by the University of Amsterdam Business School and by ACE @ Science Park. Entrepreneurship is offered for Bachelor, Masters and MBA students. In addition ACE @ Science Park offers workshops and seminars on science and technology entrepreneurship to faculty, Ph.D. and post-docs.

Company Profile

At the broadest level, the mission of IBED is to increase our understanding of the diversity and dynamics of ecosystems from the level of molecules and genes to entire ecosystems. IBED research is primarily driven by scientific curiosity; our aim is to unravel how ecosystems function in their full complexity, and how they change due to natural processes and human interference. The focus in IBED lies on the study of two interlinked aspects: (i) how do organisms interact with one another and with their abiotic environment, and (ii) what are the dynamics that emerge from these interactions, both in space and in time.

Science and Technologies or Services

Multidisciplinary research is needed to fulfil IBED's mission. Therefore, scientists trained in biology, chemistry, physical geography and environmental sciences work together. IBED's research is also characterized by a tight interplay between experimentation, data analyses and modelling. This fits well in the ambition of the Faculty of Science of the University to play a key role in the evolving field of e-Science, i.e. the utilization of modern computational techniques and analytical tools to tackle fundamental scientific problems. Progressively more initiatives of co-operations take advantage of the different disciplines present in IBED. The research of the Institute is organized in three themes: (1) Biodiversity and Evolution, (2) Geo-Ecology, and (3) Community Dynamics. Integrated research spanning all three Themes is actively promoted.

Company Profile

KIT Biomedical Research is a unique not-for-profit centre where science, product development and policy formulation are brought together to improve the detection of infectious diseases that threaten public health in low- and middle-income countries.
At KIT Biomedical Research we identify, design, develop, evaluate and implement such tools and develop guidelines and contribute to policy development for their rational use. The outcomes of this research regularly lead to out-sourcing of our expertise and materials in both public and private partnerships.
Our department is a multicultural environment, where approximately 35 people with professional backgrounds in immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, epidemiology, public health and quality assurance work together. This diversity has also led KIT Biomedical Research into other areas of expertise related to diagnostics, such as laboratory systems strengthening and advisory services.
It is the combination of basic science, diagnostic product development and implementation which allows us to address public health issues in a characteristic and comprehensive way that appeals to public and private partners in the fields of research, diagnostics, capacity building and advisory services.

Science and Technologies or Services

In the fight against infectious diseases, the improvement of diagnostic tests is dearly needed to fulfill needs of accessibility, affordability and better performance.
KIT Biomedical Research has a significant track record in test development in collaboration with industrial partners. We have developed several diagnostic tests, some of which are now considered worldwide as the gold standard (e.g. LeptoTek DriDot for leptospirosis). Hundreds of thousands of our tests have already found their way to developing countries. The simplicity and robustness of these tests make them especially suitable to be used as point-of-care tests outside the specialized laboratory.
We work closely together with partners in developing countries in many aspects of the diagnostic pipeline like need assessment, biomarker identification, test development and evaluation, and implementation. Partnerships with industrial partners who are able and willing to manufacture, market and distribute the tests are essential.
As the requirements for diagnostic tests are increasing, the technology enabling diagnostics is also improving. KIT Biomedical Research is proud to be amongst those at the scientific and technological forefront of diagnostics development; for several new tests and methods of testing we are using novel technologies, such as nanotechnology and sensor technology. Diagnostics based on these technologies have the potential to become very simple methods with high performance.
We also perform contract research for companies, provided the activities are within the scope of our mission.

Alliances

At KIT Biomedical Research we firmly believe that active partnerships are key in the fight against infectious diseases. As a result, we have an extensive global network of collaborations with laboratories, institutes, organisations and industrial partners in developing and industrialised countries. In Amsterdam we are partner in the Centre for Poverty-related Communicable Diseases (CPCD) in which AMC, PharmAccess, IATEC and KNCV work together.
Even closer to home, interdepartmental collaboration within the Institute, in particular with KIT Development Policy and Practice, is an added value to our work.
