Dedicated life sciences companies have life sciences as their core activity and spend a large part of their R&D budget on them. These companies might be Dutch subsidiaries (R&D, production or distribution centre) from foreign dedicated life sciences companies. All firms are located in the Netherlands and registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. Dedicated life sciences companies can be university spin-offs, corporate spin-offs or independently established companies.

Company Profile

A-SKIN Nederland BV is a start-up from VUmc Amsterdam, and is positioned as a tissue engineering service company developing and commercialising autologous skin products from her GMP skin culture laboratory. Current customers are located in hospitals, out-patient clinics and (long term) care facilities in the Netherlands. In the coming years the patented A-SKIN autologous skin culture technique and related products will be made available trough out-licensing and daughter companies in other European countries and beyond.
With Tiscover® A-SKIN Nederland BV offers patients and professionals a novel and superior product for healing chronic, inert skin wounds. This product fills an unmet medical need in the treatment of various skin ulcers such as due to decubitus, diabetes or vascular malfunctioning.

Science and Technologies or Services

A-SKIN Nederland BV has an exclusive license from VUmc for its proprietary know-how on rapid culturing of autologous skin patches starting from small biopsies. Tiscover® is autologous full thickness skin cultured from small (3mm ø) punch biopsies from patient own healthy skin. For constructing a Tiscover patch of 1.5 cm2 only 2 biopsies of 3 mm ø are needed. Tiscover® consists of a fully differentiated epidermis on a fibroblast-populated human dermis, stimulates wound healing and closes the inert wound. Since the resulting transplants do not contain animal ingredients and are derived from patients’ own skin, no immunological rejection occurs. Tiscover® is the first cultured autologous skin product worldwide for the treatment of such ulcers.

Company Profile

AM-Pharma is a biopharmaceutical company, based in Bunnik, The Netherlands. The company is focused on the pre-clinical and clinical development of novel therapeutics to treat inflammatory diseases and infectious diseases. All our products address high medical needs and commercially attractive markets.
Our products are based on endogenous proteins and (protein derived) peptides, optimised to fight inflammatory diseases and infections. AM-Pharma has intellectual property around two scientific platforms:

Enhancing Toll Like Receptor mediated activation of innate immune cells

Dephosphorylation of extracellular substrates to influence disease processes

So far, AM-Pharma has developed two products originating from its intellectual property franchise, Alkaline Phosphatase and hLF1-11 up to the point of initial proof of clinical efficacy and safety.
AM-Pharma currently employs 17 people. We out-source all non-core know how dependent development work to specialist third party organisations.
Once our products have shown to be safe and effective in patients we out-license our products to collaboration partners who become responsible for further development and worldwide marketing.

Science and Technologies or Services

Alkaline Phosphatase (AP) (acute renal failure and ulcerative colitis)
The endogenous enzyme alkaline phosphatase is expressed in various tissues throughout the human body including kidney and GI tract. AP has been shown to dephosphorylate LPS to a non-toxic form that acts as a partial antagonist on the LPS receptor complex. In addition to LPS, AP can dephosphorylate different other substrates e.g. ATP and through this dephosphorylation interfere with inflammatory response and associated tissue damage. Proof of concept has been shown in Phase IIa Proof Of Concept trials in Acute Renal Failure and Ulcerative Colitis.

HLF 1-11 Anti microbial peptide
The antimicrobial peptide hLF1-11 comprises the first 11 N-terminal amino acids of the endogenous protein; human lactoferrin. The compound exerts both antibacterial and antifungal activity against a broad range of microorganisms. Moreover, it appears that hLF1-11 has a low propensity to generate resistance in microorganisms, because it acts by stimulating the innate immune system. Phase IIa Proof Of Concept trials have are in preparation in MRSA infections and systemic Candida infections.

Company Profile

Arthrogen was founded in 2005 as a joint venture of the Academic Medical Center (AMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and the Dubai Bones and Joints Hospital for the clinical and commercial development of an innovative gene therapy approach, developed by researchers of the AMC, as a cure for rheumatoid arthritis locally in the joints. The lead compound will enter phase-I trials in two years.

Science and Technologies or Services

Development of local gene therapy targeting TNF might provide a novel method to treat isolated arthritis activity. This could lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting primarily the site of inflammation and prevent joint destruction. The gene delivery approach, in addition to other therapeutics, may ultimately provide a more comprehensive treatment for the management of RA. Obviously, achievement of this goal will have a substantial beneficial effect on the RA patient and ultimately on society. Arthrogen aims to develop several innovative medical strategies using gene therapy for local treatment of RA, using several types of cytokines.

Company Profile

BMEYE is a technology-based company that develops innovative medical devices for the continuous non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure and cardiovascular hemodynamics.
Based on decades of fundamental technology and sensor research, BMEYE is committed to provide researchers, clinicians and patients worldwide with precise, robust, easy-to-use solutions for continuous, entirely non-invasive, cardiovascular monitoring
BMEYE Nexfin®monitors are designed for patient safety first: all measurements are completely non-invasive, with continuous data, no events are missed and with using our comfortable finger sensor, no needles, catheters or injections are needed. The precision of the Nexfin® sophisticated and robust methods provides a full hemodynamic profile with real-time data posted within a minute.

Science and Technologies or Services

Easy diagnosis, effective treatment
Patient responses to diagnostic cardiovascular tests, to interventional devices like pacemakers and to pharmacological treatment with drugs are highly variable and unpredictable, and are often composed of dynamic changes in blood pressure, vascular resistance, stroke volume and cardiac output. Today, their assessment is based on ECG measurements and intermittent standard upper arm NIBP cuff data that misses most if not all of the dynamics of the response.
Integrated continuous measurement of blood pressure and cardiac output in the BMEYE Nexfin® device allows easy and accurate diagnosis and effective follow-up of treatment, and provides the opportunity for immediate feedback to the patient on the effects of therapy and treatment.

Early warning, early and effective response
Patient response to anesthetic agents, cardiovascular drugs and surgical intervention is highly variable and unpredictable, and their combination often induces significant and rapid changes in blood pressure and cardiac output. During surgery, blood pressure monitoring, with the exception of less than 12% of patients who get direct intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring, is accomplished by using a standard cuff-based NIBP monitor, providing only intermittent measurements every 3-5 minutes. Cardiac output monitoring is even absent except in less than 4% of patients who receive pulmonary artery catheter CO monitoring.
Integrated continuous measurement of blood pressure and cardiac output allows early recognition and treatment of rapid changes in hemodynamics (where cardiac output changes usually lead blood pressure changes siginicantly in time) and provides immediate feedback on the impact of interventions for optimal patient management.

Unlike invasive A-lines and PA catheters, which carry a risk of infection or other complications, the BMEYE Nexfin® devices provide an integrated non-invasive solution for continuous blood pressure and cardiac output monitoring. In the OR today, blood pressure and cardiac output are the only critical parameters that are not monitored continuously on all patients. Heart rate, respiration and oxygenation are all monitored continuously and non-invasively for patient safety. The BMEYE Nexfin® technology allows truly complete, integrated and continuous non-invasive vital signs safety monitoring in all patients.

Company Profile

DCPrime BV is a spin-off company of the VU university medical center (VUmc) in Amsterdam, and focused on creating new therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of cancer and autoimmunity. The company develops products based on unique technologies developed at the VUmc. These include a panel of sustainable dendritic cell (DC) lines, and novel DC targeting technologies. DCPrime BV is gearing up to provide clinical proof-of-concept on DC lines for one indication before the end of 2009.

Science and Technologies or Services

In one arm of its technology base, DCPrime develops sustainable DC lines that can be clinically applied as off-the-shelf DC vaccines. These can be loaded with the desired tumor antigens, but also with viral antigens or antigens for which tolerance is desirable. Also other genes of interest can be introduced into these DC lines without harming their antigen presentation potential, to introduce desirable modulations.
The first DC line, DCOne, is currently being prepared for entering clinical testing, and with several external partners. Scale-up procedures are being developed, and QA/QC compliant dossiers are being built on product specifications, production parameters, harvesting and storage conditions, quality assays, and reproducibility of all processes.
In the second arm of its technology base, DCPrime is performing pre-clinical validation of innovative DC targeting tools that can be directly applied to skin. The technological basis for these products will be prepared for strategic collaborations with co-development partners.

Alliances

Company Profile

DC4U B.V. aims to develop therapeutic and diagnostic tools for cancer. The company owns the exclusive worldwide license for all existing and all future IP in the field of glycoproteins and glycosylation processes involved in immune signalling, for use in the development of vaccines or therapeutics or diagnostics in the areas of infectious diseases, immunological disorders and cancer. DC4U B.V. has a strong team with scientific, legal, financial, commercial, IP and licensing expertise.

Science and Technologies or Services

Recently, glycomics research has yielded potential leads that may provide innovative solutions for the treatment of cancer. Glycomics is a new biomedical discipline that investigates how sugar modification of macromolecules (glycosylation) affects their biological and pathological function. Recent exciting discoveries in this field, in which Prof. Dr. Y. van Kooyk has a world-leading role, are further explored. DC4U B.V. strongly believes that liposomes containing highly specific APC-targeting signals using glycans provide the answer in the search for a new vaccine to cure colon cancer. The fact that certain glycans can target two different APC subsets allows us for the first time to design a vaccine that targets both subsets that have strong immune-modulating capacity.

Company Profile

Dynomics aims to be the worldwide leader in the development of tests that provide diagnostic information on the classification of leukemia and lymphoma and information on the prognosis and staging of the disease.
The developed tests present the clinician with a meaningful improvement over current methods for diagnosing leukemia and lymphoma.

Science and Technologies or Services

Currently available diagnostic tests for leukemia diagnosis are relatively expensive and take a long processing times (at least 2 to 3 days). It is important for a diagnostic test to provide rapid results. Also the precise classification of leukemia has major implications for prognosis, treatment choice and dosage. For example, the Dynomics' multiplex single tube assay for detection and identification of fusion proteins derived from chromosome aberrations provides a result in a few hours, whereas the traditional tests for detection of chromosome with fusion genes can take up to several days. Once the treatment has been chosen, the physician can monitor the effectiveness of the leukemia treatment during follow-up with the Dynomics' single fusion tube protein detection kit.
Dynomics is working on the development of the first kit for disease (sub-) classification and progression measurement and on kits containing antibodies against molecules in lymphoid development for (sub) classification of leukemias and lymphoma and possibly for evaluation of B-cell and T-cell subsets in auto-immune diseases and allergies.
