Company Profile

AMC is internationally renowned for its expertise in HIV, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and gastroenterology. At its premises several dedicated research institutes such as the NIN (Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences) and the medical department of the Royal Tropical Institute are housed, as are several biotechnology companies, such as Oncomethylome Sciences and AMC spin-offs AMT and Arthrogen. In order to accommodate more biomedical institutes and companies on the campus, AMC is currently building the Medical Business Park, which will provide 100,000 m2 of new space for laboratories and offices, as well as an incubator for start-ups. This concentration of expertise makes AMC much more than an academic hospital, and provides a breeding ground for fruitful scientific collaboration and business.

Company Profile

Arthrogen was founded in 2005 as a joint venture of the Academic Medical Center (AMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and the Dubai Bones and Joints Hospital for the clinical and commercial development of an innovative gene therapy approach, developed by researchers of the AMC, as a cure for rheumatoid arthritis locally in the joints. The lead compound will enter phase-I trials in two years.

Science and Technologies or Services

Development of local gene therapy targeting TNF might provide a novel method to treat isolated arthritis activity. This could lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting primarily the site of inflammation and prevent joint destruction. The gene delivery approach, in addition to other therapeutics, may ultimately provide a more comprehensive treatment for the management of RA. Obviously, achievement of this goal will have a substantial beneficial effect on the RA patient and ultimately on society. Arthrogen aims to develop several innovative medical strategies using gene therapy for local treatment of RA, using several types of cytokines.

Company Profile

DCPrime BV is a spin-off company of the VU university medical center (VUmc) in Amsterdam, and focused on creating new therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of cancer and autoimmunity. The company develops products based on unique technologies developed at the VUmc. These include a panel of sustainable dendritic cell (DC) lines, and novel DC targeting technologies. DCPrime BV is gearing up to provide clinical proof-of-concept on DC lines for one indication before the end of 2009.

Science and Technologies or Services

In one arm of its technology base, DCPrime develops sustainable DC lines that can be clinically applied as off-the-shelf DC vaccines. These can be loaded with the desired tumor antigens, but also with viral antigens or antigens for which tolerance is desirable. Also other genes of interest can be introduced into these DC lines without harming their antigen presentation potential, to introduce desirable modulations.
The first DC line, DCOne, is currently being prepared for entering clinical testing, and with several external partners. Scale-up procedures are being developed, and QA/QC compliant dossiers are being built on product specifications, production parameters, harvesting and storage conditions, quality assays, and reproducibility of all processes.
In the second arm of its technology base, DCPrime is performing pre-clinical validation of innovative DC targeting tools that can be directly applied to skin. The technological basis for these products will be prepared for strategic collaborations with co-development partners.

Alliances

DCPrime BV works together with the VU medical center, and with many life sciences companies and CRO’s in Europe.

Company Profile

DC4U B.V. aims to develop therapeutic and diagnostic tools for cancer. The company owns the exclusive worldwide license for all existing and all future IP in the field of glycoproteins and glycosylation processes involved in immune signalling, for use in the development of vaccines or therapeutics or diagnostics in the areas of infectious diseases, immunological disorders and cancer. DC4U B.V. has a strong team with scientific, legal, financial, commercial, IP and licensing expertise.

Science and Technologies or Services

Recently, glycomics research has yielded potential leads that may provide innovative solutions for the treatment of cancer. Glycomics is a new biomedical discipline that investigates how sugar modification of macromolecules (glycosylation) affects their biological and pathological function. Recent exciting discoveries in this field, in which Prof. Dr. Y. van Kooyk has a world-leading role, are further explored. DC4U B.V. strongly believes that liposomes containing highly specific APC-targeting signals using glycans provide the answer in the search for a new vaccine to cure colon cancer. The fact that certain glycans can target two different APC subsets allows us for the first time to design a vaccine that targets both subsets that have strong immune-modulating capacity.

Company Profile

Genmab is headquartered in Copenhagen (Denmark) and has operations in Utrecht (The Netherlands), Princeton (US), Brooklin Park (US) and Stevenage (UK). From its Research & Discovery facilities in Utrecht, The Netherlands, the preclinical activities take place. After characterization and optimisation of lead candidates, the human antibodies are clinically evaluated by Genmab A/S, the corporate headquarter in Copenhagen, Denmark. This location also accommodates the regulatory and medical departments. From Genmab Inc. in Princeton, USA the US clinical activities are coordinated. From Genmab Ltd. in Hitchin, UK the UK clinical activities are coordinated.

Science and Technologies or Services

Genmab uses a combination of innovative technology platforms in multidisciplinary teams of biologists, biochemists and MD's. Antibodies, one of the body’s most important natural defenses, are proteins that seek out, recognize and bind to disease targets. A specific antibody directs the immune system to a particular target like a key fitting into a lock. It is this specificity that makes antibodies potentially useful in various therapeutic applications. Our skilled pre-clinical team, located in Utrecht, ensures that the best possible antibody candidate is selected to become a potential product. A panel of antibodies is generated and these antibodies are put through a rigorous series of laboratory functional assays designed to identify characteristics of the best therapeutic product.

Alliances

At present, Genmab has multiple partnerships to gain access to disease targets and develop novel human antibodies including agreements with GlaxoSmithKline and Roche.

Company Profile

The company spun-out of VU University Amsterdam in 2009 and is based on over 30 years of GPCR research. At present the company works in close collaboration with the academic group and has obtained all intellectual property rights to its GPCR research programs.

Current in-house discovery is comprised of a selective histamine H3R antagonist and histamine H4R antagonist program. In addition to the development of selective antagonists, a series of compounds is being developed with a mixed histaminergic profile that combines histamine H1R and histamine H4R antagonism in a single non-imidazole molecule.

Science and Technologies or Services

Griffin Discoveries offers comprehensive in vitro profiling of compounds that allows for a better understanding of observed compound behavior in vivo. Compound profiles for ligand binding and receptor activation can be generated for all histamine receptors of human, mouse and rat. In addition, profiles can be generated for monkey, dog and guinea-pig histamine receptors upon special request.
