Company Profile

The VUmc is home to over 6,000 employees, with 1,500 in R&D. VUmc is also home to a number of dedicated research institutes in its main medical research areas (cancer, immunology, infectious diseases, autoimmunity, Alzheimer and Multiple sclerosis (MS)):

  • VUmc Institute for Cancer and Immunology/Cancer Center Amsterdam (V-ICI/CCA)
  • Alzheimer Institute
  • MS Centre
  • Institute for Extramural Medical Research (EMGO)
  • Research Institute for Clinical and Experimental Neurosciences (ICEN)
  • Institute for Cardiovascular Research (ICaRVU)

The remaining faculties of the VU University together count 4,000 employees, of which 2,300 as scientific staff.

While the core activities of the VU and VUmc are education, research and patient care, the VU and VUmc also stimulate innovation and entrepeneurship, and therefore established a Technology Transfer Office (TTO). This TTO VU&VUmc is industry’s partner for getting access to innovation and expertise from the VU and the VUmc researchers. It facilitates technology transfer and commercialization for VU&VUmc researchers, and presents industry with a broad range of licensing and co-development opportunities in many R&D areas.

Science and Technologies or Services

At the VUmc, scientific research is dedicated to solving issues that will accelerate translation of research results to the clinic. In this goal, the VUmc greatly profits from being located on the same campus as other faculties of the VU University, with internationally renowned expertise in e.g. ICT, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, and biology. Together, VU and VUmc foster many interdisciplinary programs in drug development, imaging, pharmacology, bioinformatics, proteomics and genomics. The VU&VUmcTechnology Transfer Office facilitates the knowledge valorization process in all these areas.

Alliances

The VU and VUmc maintain multiple relationships with biotech and pharma companies, and with other national and international research institutes and hospitals. They also have spun-out a number of start-up companies.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
