Company profile

The City of Amsterdam is the national leader in its concentration of both scientists and research institutes. It is home to the science faculties and research institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Vrije University (VU), the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam, the Medical Centre of the VU, and the institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The level of scientific and technological research is therefore world class.

Many research projects result in market-oriented innovations. This has a positive impact on the economy and society as a whole. However, the commercialization process whereby scientific innovations are brought to the market is still relatively undeveloped. Scientists lack entrepreneurial and business skills, whereas business people do not easily come into contact with the innovations originating from the research conducted at Science Park Amsterdam and the various scientific faculties.

Science Park Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (SPACE) was established to foster education in entrepreneurship, stimulate and support innovative startups based on research done at Science Park Amsterdam institutes and at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. SPACE aims to attracts students, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and companies to start and support new ventures at Science Park Amsterdam and become the ‘Amsterdam hub’ for science and technology entrepreneurship.
