Company profile
ORCA Therapeutics B.V. was founded in 2005 by Aglaia Oncology Fund to design and develop novel candidates for treatment of cancer using Oncolytic Replication Competent Agents (ORCA). ORCA Therapeutics’ technology and IP portfolio originates from the research performed at the Department of Medical Oncology at the VU University Medical Center (VUmc) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company has a platform of technologies which are predominantly based on highly engineered oncolytic adenoviruses. ORCA Therapeutics is expanding its product portfolio through alliances with academic centres of excellence and industry partners. ORCA Therapeutics is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Science and Technologies or Services
ORCA Therapeutics’ core technology entails the use of Oncolytic Replication Competent Agents (ORCA) for treatment of cancer. These agents are derived from naturally occurring viruses. Oncolytic viruses replicate selectively in cancer cells and kill these cells during replication.
Upon destroying the infected cancer cells, progeny viruses are released that in turn will infect and kill adjacent cancer cells. This results in a strong anti-cancer effect. In addition, oncolytic viruses are used as efficient delivery agents - e.g. to express anti-cancer products at high levels in cancer cells- or as anti-cancer vaccines.
ORCA Therapeutics has a technology platform based on highly engineered oncolytic viruses. The company’s major goal is to increase the potency of oncolytic viruses in terms of killing cancer cells without compromising the safety of the virus for usage in patients. ORCA Therapeutics has licensed rights to a portfolio of oncolytic viruses and other related technologies from VUmc. This portfolio includes a series of replication competent viruses that cause rapid destruction of cancer cells through the replication and release of new viral particles.
