Company Profile

The Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL) combines a scientific research laboratory with a specialised clinic. Improving cancer treatment depends heavily on a better scientific understanding of the function and development of normal cells and tumor cells. Through fundamental and clinical research we hope to contribute to better cancer treatment. Discoveries made in the laboratory are rapidly introduced into the clinic through our translational research program driven by close collaboration between our scientists and clinicians. The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) is the only dedicated cancer center in the Netherlands and aims to be a national and international center of excellence in cancer research. To reach our goals the NKI has a dedicated staff of internationally recognized scientists, highly motivated students and state of the art support facilities.

Science and Technologies or Services

The three major areas of research are fundamental, clinical and translational cancer research. A thorough understanding of the biological processes of normal cells is the basis for understanding cancerous cells. The laboratory covers all major areas of cancer research, with special emphasis on cell-based screens, mouse tumor models, cell biology, structural biology and epidemiology. The institute coordinates and participates in many clinical trials; most of these are phase 1, 2 or 3 studies of potential new treatments such as combinations of chemotherapeutics, radiotherapy and/or surgery. Results obtained from fundamental research are translated into clinical applications as part of our translation research program.

Scientists at the NKI are among the world’s most talented inventors and users of new technologies. This can involve gadgets and reagents for use at the laboratory bench, the creation of new animal models, or new high-throughput devices in centralized facilities, e.g. microarray facility, microscopy facility, robotics and screening center, flow cytometry facility, and tissue and serum bank. The NKI has particular expertise in using and generating new animal models for cancer.

Alliances

The NKI-AvL maintain multiple relationships with biotech and pharma companies, and with other national and international research institutes and hospitals. They also have spun-out a number of start-up companies, of which Agendia is a clear example in how the spin-out activities can lead to better patient care.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
