Genzyme’s research and development efforts are focused on the areas of medicine where it markets commercial products. Genzyme identifies unmet medical needs and its large team of scientists and researchers uses a broad range of scientific approaches and technologies to meet those needs. The company is a leader in novel areas such as cell and gene therapies and biomaterials. Genzyme also partners with other companies to develop new products and supports research conducted by top academic and independent medical science centers.

Alliances

Genzyme has many different alliances with companies and research groups around the world. In the Netherlands Genzyme is collaborating with Macrozyme BV in the area of diabetes and scientific and clinical projects are ongoing with researchers in several academic centers, including the AMC.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
