The Central Veterinary Institute carries out numerous activities. It does research for government and commercial companies and it advises on developing effective policies with regard to control animal diseases. The Institute closely follows international developments and is often the initiator of new research programmes. Its own vision and strategic investments in research and development regularly lead to new developments and new knowledge, thus ensuring that the Central Veterinary Institute remains an attractive organisation for its clients.
The areas in which the Central Veterinary Institute works cover the entire range of diseases (caused by viruses, bacteria, prions and parasites) found among agricultural livestock, fish and shellfish and wild animals. The Institute also studies pathogenic organisms in animals that form a threat to humans (zoonoses).
The staff of about 280 highly qualified people undertakes research for a large group of clients. The research varies from specialist to multi-disciplinary. For research the focus is always on the concepts of quality and independence. The Central Veterinary Institute is part of Wageningen UR and has an annual turnover of about 34 million euro.
