Company Profile

BDS is a hybrid-type biotech company, which was founded in 2001 as a spin off from the VU university Amsterdam. BDS is on the one hand an R&D-performing SME developing novel bio-based detection systems, using a functional genomics approach. On the other hand, BDS is and R&D end-user providing service analysis for food safety and environmental quality, and is licensing its technologies to over 40 (inter)national commercial and governmental laboratories in more than 20 different laboratories. BDS has an annual turnover of about 2 million Euros and runs a profit since 2005. BDS, has laboratories for R&D and for service analysis and is located in the high quality facilities of the Amsterdam Science Park at the kruislaan in the east of Amsterdam.

Science and Technologies or Services

BDS runs an extensive R&D programme and spends about 50% of its annual budget on R&D, including several large scale R&D projects, including both national and international partners. The main focus is on the development of mechanism-based cellular bioassays, using functional genomics,  as quick and low cost screening tools for food safety and environmental quality assessment on the one hand, but also as in vitro screens used as alternatives to whole animal tests for safety screening of new and existing chemicals, and for activity profiling of potential drug candidates.  BDS provides service analysis in the indicated sectors in its ISO 17025 accredited laboratories.

Alliances

BDS has collaborative agreements with several allied parties mainly involving distributors and agents to help marketing its products globally. The institute for environmental studies of VU-University is an allied party with respect to analytical chemistry, in addition there are allied partnerships with several other knowledge institutes (WUR, NIOO, RIVM, TNO,KIWA, etc.) mainly within the framework of collaborative R&D projects.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
