NKI-AVL receives a €4,5M for new Cancer Systems Biology Centre

The Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL) received a EUR 4,5 million grant from the NWO for a new research center focused on understanding and mapping the complicated regulatory mechanisms involved in the appearance and behavior of breastcancer.

The Cancer Systems Biology Centre (CSBC) will bring together different existing areas of research to develop computermodels that can be used for better diagnosis and also to predict which treatments will be most effective.

Unique is that the abundant expertise within the institute will be structurally integrated. Expertise on fundamental research and treatment of patients in the clinic will be linked with eachother. The advantage is in possibility to select a particular treatment based on personal profiles instead of using the standard combination therapy, thereby providing women the biggest chance on succes for the lowest costs and discomfort, but also avoiding alternative treatments that have a high pobability of failure.

The first four years of the centre will be financed with the NWO grant, thereafter the NKI-AVL will continue to finance the combined activities. Researchers expect that the developed knowledge will also be applicable to other forms of cancer and even other illnesses.
