NWO awards 14 Rubicon grants

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded 14 Rubicon grants in the area of life sciences.
Rubicon offers researchers who have completed their doctorates in the past year the chance to gain experience at a top research institution outside the Netherlands. The programme also offers talented researchers from abroad the opportunity to obtain grants to spend one year conducting research in the Netherlands.There are three selection rounds a year for Rubicon grants.

This round grants have been rewarded to:

•    Dr. T. Cantaert, UvA -> Yale University: De rol van donor B-cellen in afstoting van stamcellen
•    Dr. ing. M.H.A.M. Fens, UU Children’s Hospital -> Oakland Research Institute: Ontrafelen van bloedvat verstoppingen in sikkelcelziekte
•    Drs. B. Ferwerda, UMC St Radboud -> University of Pennsylvania: De oorsprong van ziek worden
•    Dr. J.W.J. van Heijst, NKI -> MSKCC: Verbeteren afweer tegen tuberculose
•    S.E.V. Linsen MSc, Hubrecht Instituut/UU -> Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences: Ontwikkeling: een gevoelige zaak
•    Dr. C. Maas, UMC Utrecht -> Karolinska Institute – Center of Molecular Medicine: Het ontrafelen van bloedstolsels
•    Ir. L. Markesteijn, WUR -> University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: Pompen of verdrogen?
•    Dr. J. Mullenders, UU -> Cancer Institute NYU School of Medicine: Nieuwe genen in kinderkanker
•    Dr. M.H.C. van Rooijen, UU -> Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital Boston: Huidkanker in zijn ergste vorm
•    Dr. N.C. Smits, RU -> Dartmouth Medical School: Gen HS3ST1 in hart- en vaatziekten
•    Dr. K.C. Toh, VU -> Imperial College London: Hoe bacteriën het licht zien
•    Dr. ing. Van Zanten, UU -> Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research: De rol van de structuur van DNA in de productie en kieming van zaden
•    Dr. A. Zhernakova, UMC Utrecht -> Harvard Medical School: Shared genetic risk factors of autoimmune diseases
•    W. van Zon BSc, VU -> University of Manchester: De laatste stappen in de celdeling

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
