Booster Grants for public-private partnerships in life sciences

The Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI) is a proponent of an incubator model in which new public-private partnerships are created, financially stimulated during a certain period and then successfully embedded.

In the past, NGI has made booster grants available for the formation of consortia in certain areas. In 2010, NGI is organising an open call for booster grants to encourage public-private partnerships in the life sciences.

Proposals should fit within one of the following themes:

  • Development of diagnostic tests for personalised health
  • Development of sustainable biobased chemicals, materials and energy
  • Increasing food security by improving crops yields

For each of these themes, the leading technology for the approach should be: epigenomics, next generation sequencing, or synthetic biology, or a combination of these technologies.

This round will start with the submission of a pre-proposal. In the pre-proposals a grant of € 1 million can be applied for and the required matching (own contribution from the consortium) is also € 1 million. The budget for this funding round is € 3 million.

Submission
Pre-proposals should be submitted no later than 14 October 2010. Applicants whose pre-proposals are selected by the evaluation committee will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Applications can be submitted via the NWO website, where the Booster Grant brochure and the pre-proposal form can also be accessed.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
