VUmc: supplemental oxygen not always good

January 11, 2012 - In medical emergencies, such as acute coronary syndrome, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), stroke, and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), supplemental oxygen is often routinely administered.

Most physicians believe this intervention is potentially lifesaving, and many guidelines support the routine use of high-dose supplemental oxygen.

Supplemental oxygen can have detrimental effects for the patient however, doctors from VUmc say. Their research has been published in the magazine Archives of Internal Medicine.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
