This topic was presented at the BioBusiness Event 2011, June 7 2011, from the perspective of both academia and industry. Presenting for Life Sciences Center Amsterdam: Tim Moser, who is a life science business development manager for LSCA at the VU University. Joining from MSD, Jeroen Tonnaer, who is Senior Director, External Scientific Affairs and Worldwide Licensing for Benelux, Russia, Israel and South Africa.

As the pharmaceutical industry changes its discovery process, the need for relevant innovation arising from academic science grows ever larger. However, the language, culture, philosophies, and expectations of academic researchers can be very different from their industry colleagues. How to translate? The most important step is to understand where the differences exist, what creates friction, and how to find and develop mutual interest.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
