The Amsterdam area is home to an impressive number of companies and knowledge institutes active in the life sciences. This offers opportunities of clustering, thus strengthening the region’s economical structure and power to innovate and compete. The Amsterdam BioMed Cluster has been set up to gain economical spin off of the bio- and medical technology in the region.

Amsterdam has the highest concentration of Life Sciences research in the Netherlands. It is home to two universities with academic hospitals, a number of research institutes, and a specialised cancer hospital and research center. More than 60 Life Sciences companies have already chosen to set up office in the Amsterdam region, of which 23 university spin offs.

There are over 6,000 students in Life Sciences and medicine, taking bachelors, masters, MD, and PhD degrees. The Life Sciences business in Amsterdam currently employs around 4,000 people.

In the entire region you can find nineteen hospitals, two dedicated science parks and numerous facilities to support R&D.

Many life sciences support organisations accompany the dedicated life sciences companies, We have only started to get an idea of these, and count over hundred such organisations supplying and servicing the sector to date. Amongst these are twelve contract/ clinical research organisations (CRO) and over ten investors.

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area attracts a wide range of nationalities from all over the world. Innovation, creativity and commercial spirit are among its core values. These same values apply to the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster.

Ten reasons for Life Sciences companies to come to the Amsterdam region:

As a result of a visit from Amsterdam life sciences delegates to Boston in May 2004, the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster was set up as a networking organisation for the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, with the goal to provide a platform for life sciences and related organisations to meet and interact.

As founders, the following parties made a substantial contribution towards the creation of the network: Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, VU University Medical Centre, Sanquin, Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce, Knowledge Network Amsterdam, City of Amsterdam.

Initially the organisation of the Cluster was taken on by the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce with the help of knowledge institutes and a selected group of life sciences companies, such as Avantium and Agendia. In 2006, the Amsterdam Innovation Motor took over.

The Amsterdam Innovation Motor is an initiative of the “Kenniskring Amsterdam” (Amsterdam Knowledge Network), and aims to promote innovation and cooperation in knowledge intensive sectors in the Amsterdam region by executing and encouraging concrete projects. The Amsterdam Innovation Motor is a not-for-profit organisation, founded by both public and private parties. It successfully bids for funds to undertake projects such as the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster.

Since the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster’s inception, more than 90 organisations decided to become part of the network. New members are joining as the Cluster gains momentum.
