The Amsterdam area is home to an impressive number of companies and knowledge institutes active in the life sciences. This offers opportunities of clustering, thus strengthening the region’s economical structure and power to innovate and compete. The Amsterdam BioMed Cluster has been set up to gain economical spin off of the bio- and medical technology in the region.

About us

Apart from building a dynamic community to exploit synergy between the life sciences organisations present in the Amsterdam region, the objective of the Cluster is to open up our regional knowledge- and technology base to those, national and international, parties interested in doing business with us.

Facts & figures

Amsterdam has the highest concentration of Life Sciences research in the Netherlands. It is home to two universities with academic hospitals, a number of research institutes, and a specialised cancer hospital and research center. More than 60 Life Sciences companies have already chosen to set up office in the Amsterdam region, of which 23 university spin offs.

History

As a result of a visit from Amsterdam life sciences delegates to Boston in May 2004, the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster was set up as a networking organisation for the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, with the goal to provide a platform for life sciences and related organisations to meet and interact.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
