Epigenetic Code Reader

Dr Astrid Visser received a Horizon Breakthrough Grant from the Netherlands Genomics Initiative to return from the US to the Netherlands and create the proof-of-principle for the ECR. Her highly regarded, long-time colleague Prof Roel van Driel offered the hosting facilities at the Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences (SILS), University of Amsterdam, to develop the technology. Industrial and scientific partners were identified and collaborations have been set up. A patent application has been submitted. With additional funding, the ECR will be taken to the next level. A commercial prototype can be expected in three years.

Recently the topsector plan Life Sciences & Health was published and presented to Minister Verhagen, of the so-called ELI Ministry. The document is an amazing compressed 60-pager, based on months of hard work by the group of experts chaired by Roel Fonville, and summarizes the conclusions after dozens of 1-to-1 meetings, five regional group sessions with dozens of opinion leaders and after having received over 170 (!) memo's, white papers and letters of intent.
