Controlled Light Exposure Microscopy

Since 1994, Dr E. Manders has worked intensively in the field of live-cell imaging, observing that cells often die during microscopic observation due to the toxic effect of illumination light. Years later, he invented a method to reduce light without compromising image quality, using illumination photons more effectively. The first prototypes proved 5 to 10-fold reduction of phototoxicity.

Collaboration with an industrial partner will bring the CLEM technique to the market by the end of 2005. The technology is being improved for a broader field of application (clinical research and pharmacology). CLEM is expected to become a standard technique. .
