Advances in mass spectrometry

Using novel MS techniques, we have characterized serum protein profiles of breast cancer and colorectal cancer patients that are absent in the serum of healthy control volunteers. Discriminating serum proteins have been identified. Moreover, we have seen that a haptoglobin fragment in the serum of breast cancer patients taken after surgery but prior to adjuvant chemotherapy strongly predicts recurrence-free survival. We aim to trace and identify novel serum protein biomarkers that predict how cancer patients will respond to chemotherapy treatment, ultimately intended to offer the patient the most optimal mode of treatment based on the serum protein profile.
